(United Press International circulated the following story on December 22.)
Paris, Ill. — Fourteen cars of a CSX freight train derailed in Paris, Ill., Wednesday leaking dangerous hydrochloric acid and diesel fuel, the Chicago Tribune said.
The 55-car train was about a mile north of the central business district in the east-central Illinois town when the derailment occurred around 8 a.m., forcing the evacuation of about 250 people within a mile of the tracks.
Hydrochloric acid leaked from one tank car and the train’s two engines spilled fuel.
No injuries were reported.
CSX crews repaired the leaks and some people were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday afternoon after the danger posed by acid vapor fumes dissipated, police said.
The freight train was traveling from Decatur, Ill., to Indianapolis.
CSX officials were conducting an investigation to determine what caused the train to leave the tracks.
