NEW ORLEANS — Plaquemines Parish officials are still trying to remove several railroad cars that derailed onto a Belle Chasse street Wednesday afternoon.

Col. Charles Guey, chief of operations for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, said the derailment occurred about 3 p.m. near the intersection of Louisiana 23 and Avenue G.

Five rail cars fell into the streets after the tracks apparently collapsed beneath them, although the cause has not been determined, Guey said. The incident is expected to close Avenue G until this afternoon.

The derailment blocked access to Louisiana 406 for about an hour, but that access has been cleared. It was unclear which railroad company owned the cars Wednesday.
