NEW YORK — A Long Island Rail Road train that derailed Monday at the Jamaica station did not cause any delays during Tuesday’s morning rush despite a warning from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
“There were no late trains for the morning rush,” MTA spokesman Brian Dolan said.”
MTA officials said two cars on a westbound train were derailed at 4 p.m. Monday. There were no passengers on the train and no one was injured. The 12-car train was headed to Penn Station before a return trip to Long Island.
Officials had predicted delays of 15 to 20 minutes throughout the morning rush Tuesday because Track 1 was closed and commuters would have to be rerouted to other trains. “We took other steps to route trains through the station, which worked well,” Dolan said.
By 12:55 p.m. Tuesday one of the derailed cars had been put back on track and the second was rerailed by 2:25 p.m. Work to fix the track started soon after. Dolan said the same rerouting plan used to avoid delays in the morning would be used for the evening rush.
An investigation is under way to determine what caused the derailment.
