COBOURG, Ont. — As many as a dozen Via Rail trains travelling between Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto were delayed yesterday afternoon after a freight train derailed.

Tracks were shut down around noon between Cobourg and Port Hope after nine cars from a 115-car freight train derailed.

There were no injuries and no dangerous cargo was on board.

Via Rail said passengers on as many as 12 trains were to be stopped at a station somewhere before the blockage and detoured by bus to another waiting train.

Of the derailed cars, which were upright but leaning, two were carrying paper products and seven were empty.
