DEETH, Nev. — Union Pacific crews continued cleanup operations and an investigation Tuesday into the cause of the derailment of 13 railroad cars carrying new cars and trucks east of Elko.

The westbound train derailed about 4:45 a.m. on Monday, Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said. It was headed from Kansas City, Kan., to Warm Springs, Calif.

Elko County Sheriff Neil Harris said the train apparently jumped the tracks and collided “accordian-style” near Deeth. At least two rail cars toppled to one side.

No one was injured in the accident. The cause remains under investigation.

Crews replaced about 880 feet of track and intended to reopen the line Tuesday afternoon. Their work was hampered by the flood-swollen Humboldt River which has left the town under several inches of water for several weeks.
