MONTREAL — A train derailment near Manseau, Que. has disrupted passenger and freight traffic. No injuries were reported when 19 platforms carrying shipping containers came off their tracks, 75 kilometres west of Quebec City.
Steve Callaghan of the Transportation Safety Board is investigating the derailment. He says the train was travelling from Halifax to Montreal on a CN line.
“We have a structural failure which allowed one of the cars to come down on the track. When the train came to a switch, this started a derailment,” says Callaghan.
Although some of the containers held dangerous goods, Callaghan says no spills occurred.
Malcolm Andrews, a spokesperson for Via Rail, says up to 10 passenger trains have been affected by the derailment.
“All the regular intercity trains between Montreal and Quebec City are being replaced by a charter bus service,” says Andrews.
Andrews says he expects regular service to resume by 9 p.m. Tuesday.
