DERBY, Kan. — A Derby man, convicted of derailing a train in Butler County, has been sentenced to five months in a half-way house followed by five months of home detention, according to the Derby Daily Reporter.

Preston S. Shields, 27, of Derby, pled guilty to one count of derailing a train in Federal Court on Dec. 3,2001.

United States Attorney Jim Flory, said Shields admitted at his plea that on May 13, 2001, he moved an excavator scoop into the path of railroad traffic and derailed and wrecked three train engines belonging to Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company.

Along with the detention, Shields was ordered to pay $114,200 in restitution and spend three additional years on supervised release.
