WASHINGTON, D.C.– In an obvious display of disregard for striking workers, Senate candidate Elizabeth Dole crossed an active picket line on October 3 at a Washington, D.C. restaurant, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters reported on their website. The picket line was set up by Local 25 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) at La Colline restaurant on Capitol Hill.
“It is troubling that a former Secretary of Labor would show such blatant disregard to a strikeline,” said Jack Cipriani, President of Teamsters Local 391 in Greensboro, N.C. “North Carolina’s working families deserve a Senator who understands the basic tenets of labor.”
The HERE strike against La Colline has lasted for more than five years as cooks, servers and bus-staff have sought a fair contract.
“Mrs. Dole’s actions prove that the North Carolina Federation of the AFL-CIO was right to endorse Erskine Bowles for U.S. Senate,” Cipriani added. “We will do everything possible to ensure that Mrs. Dole stops living out of her suitcase in Salisbury and returns to her true home at the Watergate complex in Washington.”
