SECAUCUS, N.J. — Downed wires on the Northeast Corridor caused delays of about an hour for commuters on NJ Transit trains Friday morning.

The wires, on Amtrak rail lines that are also used by the commuter trains, were expected to be fixed by sometime in the afternoon, said Amtrak spokeswoman Marcie Golgoski.

She said she did not know what caused the wires to come down, but said repair crews were on the scene.

Amtrak trains were delayed between 25 minutes and 45 minutes between Secaucus and New York Penn Station.

NJ Transit commuters waited for trains in the frigid temperatures, but some said they understood how the cold could affect traveling.

“I feel sorry for the people who have to get to work today. I’m sure everyone is yelling and screaming, but it is 1 degree out here,’ said David Locke, who waited in Belmar for a trip to the New York Historical Society.

NJ Transit said trains were delayed on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line. Midtown Direct trains were going to Hoboken instead of New York.

It was the second time this week that problems on the Amtrak rails snarled NJ Transit’s commute. On Monday, Amtrak limited the number of trains on the Northeast Corridor to protect switches after the weekend blizzard.

“What else is new,” said Arthur Peckerar of Manchester as he waited for a train to get to his New York office.
