HARTFORD, Conn. — Millions of people have spoken: They want to take the train. The federal government should be shouting “All aboard!” Amtrak officials announced last fall that its trains carried 31.2 million passengers in the fiscal year ending in September, the highest yearly ridership since Congress created the national passenger railroad in 1971.
