POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Consider this blatant contrast: When people miss the deadline for a bill payment to a credit card company, a medical group or a utility, they still have to pay up and usually are socked with interest. When powerful industries such as railroad operators miss a deadline imposed by Congress, they are sheepishly rewarded with additional years to fulfill their obligations. It’s completely outrageous and made far worse by the fact that, in case of the blown deadline by the railroad operators, the safety of the traveling public is being jeopardized.
