YAKIMA, Wash. — The railroad defines Yakima’s sense of place — actually, its place itself. An integral part of the city’s early history took place in 1884, when the Northern Pacific Railroad decided to bypass the initial settlement and put its depot several miles north; residents placed more than 100 buildings on rollers and hauled them from what is now Union Gap to present-day downtown Yakima.
