NEWARK, N.J. — We all make mistakes. NJ Transit made a doozy. It failed to move trains from rail yards in Kearny and Hoboken to higher ground, despite forecasts that Hurricane Sandy would be a catastrophic storm. The Hudson County rail yards were swamped with as much as 6 feet of water from the tidal surge that followed Sandy. The result: millions of dollars in damage to 261 train cars and 62 locomotives.Sandy took the agency by the surprise. It wasn’t the only one lulled into complacency by previous storms. NJ Transit needs to draw lessons from Sandy, the same as everyone else who was caught flat-footed.
