NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Really, a two-person crew mandate shouldn’t be necessary. Common sense, not to mention common humanity, says it’s inviting senseless tragedy — inside the engine, outside it or both — to run a train in America’s wide-open spaces with only one person. Or even none. Yet rumors and credible statements continue to circulate that railroads operating in Nebraska, in their ongoing quest to cut operating margins, would rather move to one-person crews or totally automate trains that are already quite long and likely to grow longer.
