OMAHA, Neb. — The hammering of the Golden Spike into place 150 years ago this month at Promontory Point, Utah, launched Omaha and our nation into a dramatic new era. The sesquicentennial provides an occasion to recognize how the 19th-century railroads, and the Transcontinental Railroad above all, spurred extraordinary transformations in national life.
