ST. LOUIS — Crews were picking up the pieces Monday after an early morning freight train derailment near Bourbon, about 65 miles southwest of St. Louis, according to a wire service report.
Twenty cars of a 110-car train jumped the tracks on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. line just after midnight, said company spokesman Steve Forsberg. There were no injuries were reported and the derailed train cars were empty.
Forsberg said two of the derailed cars had carried hazardous materials, but both had been emptied before the derailment. There was some residue left in the cars, but neither was punctured in the incident, he said.
Investigators were trying to find out what caused the accident. Forsberg said he expected the line to be open again early Tuesday morning.
