NEW YORK — A Long Island Rail Road train with no passengers aboard derailed in Port Washington Wednesday night, temporarily interrupting service, railroad officials said.

The derailment happened about 9:20 p.m. and stopped service in both directions between Port Washington and Great Neck, according to Robert Brennan, a spokesman for the line. Bus service was set up to transport passengers east of Great Neck, he said.

It was unclear whether there would be regular service Thursday morning, although Brennan said the LIRR would “make every effort” to get the trains going again.

Brennan identified the derailed train as the 8:19 p.m. out of Penn Station, due to arrive in Port Washington at 9:04 p.m. He said the derailment was minor, involving one set of wheels, and nobody was hurt. The cause of the accident was unknown Wednesday night, he said.
