ALBANY, N.Y. — Amtrak is launching a big security exercise this week that will involve all levels of law enforcement and be noticeable when and where it happens, according to a company spokesman.

Though light on the specifics for security reasons, CBS 6 learned from Amtrak Media Relations Director Steve Kulm Tuesday morning about the initiative called Operation RailSafe.

Kulm said it will happen sometime this week and involve heightened station patrols by uniformed officers, explosive detections, K-9 units and unannounced random baggage checks — among other measures.

The exercise has been long-planned, Kulm said, to coincide with the European Rail Action Day exercise and is not connected with the recent terror warnings.

In September, Amtrak was joined by more than 150 police agencies for a similar security exercise in Illinois and surrounding states.
