WILLISTON, Vt. — The smell of burning railroad ties and overheated twisted metal permeated the air as dew covered the ground and the morning fog tried to clear. You could hear birds chirping. In the end five people — two crew members and three passengers — died and 149 were injured. A few hundred Vermonters went to their aid on July 7, 1984. Damage was estimated at $3.3 million by Amtrak officials.
