MONTEZUMA, Kan. — The FBI is investigating a train derailment near Montezuma that left two engineers hospitalized.
The freight train, owned by a shortline railroad, was carrying mostly grain when it derailed about 7 p.m. Tuesday while it was headed west on the Dodge City-Colorado line.
The initial investigation showed someone may have deliberately tampered with switches on the rail line, FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said. That would be a violation of federal laws involving the nation’s transportation system, he said.
No suspects had been identified Wednesday afternoon, Lanza said.
Further details were not released Wednesday afternoon. Local and state law enforcement agencies in the area referred all calls to the FBI.
