LONG BEACH, N.Y. — Commuters in Long Beach seem pleased with the new, roomier, more comfortable, more hi-tech Long Island Railroad cars, television station WABC reported.
The first train with the new M-7 cars is being used on the Long Beach Branch. A second train is expected to begin service in December.
After that, the LIRR will put two new trains into service each month.
The railroad has bought 678 cars, which include new signs that show the name of the upcoming station and seats that offer better back support.
The new trains do have fewer seats so they can make room for wheelchairs and to accommodate a handicapped accessible restroom. The changes come so LIRR complied with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Railroad spokesman Brian Dolan says the railroad will add cars to each line, to compensate for the fewer seats.
