ALBANY, N.Y. — Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Boardman plans to be at the Albany Amtrak station today to announce plans to improve rail safety in New York state.

The plans will include use of a federal track inspection vehicle to check for rail flaws from Albany to Buffalo starting this month.

An 80-car CSX freight train was traveling from Buffalo to the Albany area a week ago when 28 cars jumped the tracks. Eight tanker cars caught fire.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton immediately called for a federal investigation of statewide rail safety. Schumer also urged creation of a task force to examine C-S-X, saying this was the fifth derailment involving the railroad in New York since December.
