NASHVILLE, N.C. — A few railroad freight cars carrying scrap metal derailed Thursday near Nashville, causing no injuries, authorities said.
The cars were traveling on the Nash County Railroad, which serves business customers along a 20-mile track from Spring Hope to Rocky Mount, when the derailment occurred about 1 p.m.
Cross ties were broken and rails were pulled apart at the derailment scene.
Tim Abbott, the railroad’s general manager, said the derailment is under investigation. The railroad was trying to line up workers to repair the track late Thursday afternoon.
Nash County Railroad, based in Spring Hope, is owned by Gulf & Ohio Railways of Knoxville, Tenn.
Roughly 2 to 3 inches of snow fell Thursday in Nash County.
