WATERLOO, Ind. (AP) — A Norfolk Southern Corp. freight train has derailed in northeastern Indiana, disrupting Amtrak service into and out of Chicago.
The train derailed Friday evening in Waterloo, about 50 miles east of Elkhart. Fort Wayne television station WANE reports tons of coal spilled onto the tracks and ground.
Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham told The Associated Press today that the derailment has closed the track and forced detours of its Washington-to-Chicago and New York-to-Chicago trains. Graham said passengers will experience significant delays.
Graham says alternate transportation is being provided for passengers on the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited lines from Chicago to Toledo, Ohio.
