OLIVEHURST, Calif. — A 100-car freight train derailed early Saturday, littering the tracks with heaps of golden corn kernels but causing no injuries.

About six freight cars broke off from the Union Pacific track around 6 a.m. in Olivehurst, about 40 miles north of Sacramento. Only the conductor and engineer were on board at the time, and neither one was hurt, authorities said.

The grain shipment was on its way from Nebraska to Bakersfield, according to Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis.

The tracks remained closed for most of Saturday as workers cleaned up the mess, but they were expected to reopen by night, Davis said.
