INDIANTOWN, Fla. — A wire service reports that a freight train collided with a dump truck Wednesday, derailing eight cars and injuring the truck driver.
A gate that stops highway traffic at the intersection was in the down position, and the truck struck the gate before hitting the train, said Pembrook Burrows, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
Why the truck didn’t stop was not yet known.
The train was carrying molasses and sludge, and the truck was hauling chicken manure, Burrows said. A hazardous materials team found no leaks from the derailed cars.
The derailment delayed Amtrak service north and south of the wreck for up to 90 minutes, said Howard Riefs, an Amtrak spokesman.
The truck driver remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon in serious condition.
Indiantown is about 30 miles northwest of West Palm Beach.
