WOODBRIDGE, N.J. — A freight train derailed Wednesday afternoon, spilling its cargo of plastic pellets, police and railroad authorities said.

Eight of the train’s 11 cars overturned soon after loading up at the Kama Film Co. in the Avenel section, said Woodbridge Police Capt. Charles Rowinski.

No serious injuries were reported, but one of the two train crew members sought medical attention on his own, Rowinski said.

A Conrail spokesman said the cause of the derailment at about 12:30 p.m. was under investigation.

The accident happened on a small rail spur, meaning there was only minimal disruption of other rail traffic and no effect on area automobile traffic, authorities said.
