RENO, Nev. — A freight train hauling liquid petroleum gas, fertilizer and other cargo derailed early Thursday along a remote stretch of Pershing County, shutting down a main rail line across northern Nevada.

Lena Kent, spokeswoman for Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway in San Bernardino, Calif., said the train was en route from Stockton, Calif., to Denver when the accident occurred around 12:40 a.m.

Six cars carrying liquid petroleum gas derailed but were not compromised, Kent said.

Another carried a covered hopper of ammonium nitrate. The load did not overturn but some leakage occurred and a hazardous materials team was called, she said.

There were no injuries.

Kent said the single track is owned by Union Pacific Railroad. A temporary track was being built around the site near Lovelock 100 miles east of Reno so rail traffic could proceed while cleanup continues.

The temporary track should be finished early Friday, she said.

An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the accident, she said.
