FREMONT, Calif. — City leaders traveled to Union Pacific headquarters in Omaha earlier this month to pitch their vision for 167 vacant acres in south Fremont that the railroad purchased late last year for a freight rail yard.

Fremont had been planning for that land to be developed as part of a high-density housing, office and manufacturing hub adjacent to the former New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. auto plant, now operated by Tesla.

The city delegation, which included council members Sue Chan and Anu Natarajan as well as City Manager Fred Diaz, didn’t wrangle concessions from Union Pacific executives in attendance, including CEO Jim Young, but delegation members nonetheless said the trip was productive.
