MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Genesee & Wyoming, parent company to the Meridian and Bigbee Railroad, announced Tuesday that it has acquired most of the Maryland Midland Railway.

Maryland Midland operates 63 miles of track and has 30 employees. It is an interline carrier with CSX.

Genesee & Wyoming paid $29.1 million for an 87.4 percent stake in the carrier. The remainder is owned by Lehigh Cement, which is the line’s largest customer.
