CHICAGO — Railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc. on Wednesday it has acquired two privately-held railroads for $6 million in cash.

Greenwich, Connecticut-based Genesee & Wyoming said H&S Railroad Company Inc. and the Chattahoochee & Gulf Railroad Co. Inc., both affiliates of Gulf & Ohio Railways, primarily serve traffic between Norfolk Southern Corp. and the Bay Line, but also provide interchanges with CSX Corp.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Genesee & Wyoming also said it had exercised an option to buy 12.5 miles track previously leased from Norfolk Southern.

Genesee & Wyoming owns or has interests in 49 railroads in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bolivia and Australia.
