In September, Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) traffic from continuing operations totaled 65,999 carloads, up 3.2 percent compared with September 2007’s total.
However, same-railroad traffic decreased 3.1 percent primarily because of a decline in coal, coke and ores traffic. A coal mine in GWI’s Rocky Mountain Region closed earlier this year. In addition, farm and food products traffic fell because of reduced grain shipments in GWI’s Australia Region.
For the third quarter, the company’s traffic from continuing operations totaled 204,053 carloads, down 0.4 percent compared with third-quarter 2007’s total. Same-railroad traffic dropped 6.7 percent primarily because of the declines in farm and food product, coke, coal and ores carloads.
GWI owns and operates 63 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, and owns a minority interest in a Bolivian railroad.
