BEARDSLEY, Kan. — Until Jan. 19, R.J. Sabatka had two choices for transporting farm commodities to market from Beardsley Co-op in western Rawlins County — rail and truck. For the past 40 years, he said, 90 percent of the wheat sold to the co-op was sent to mills and other customers by rail. But on that day in January, OmniTRAX, a short-line railroad holding company, advised customers on the 130-mile Nebraska Kansas Colorado Railway that the line had been shut down.
