BELLEVUE, Mich. — A train derailed early Sunday morning, spilling tons of coal, said Eaton County Sheriff Rick Jones.

The southbound train on Grand Trunk Western Railroad was not carrying any hazardous materials when it derailed at 4 a.m. just south of Hall Road, Jones said. Twenty-six of the train’s cars filled with coal spilled, he said.

There were no injuries reported, he said. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

Authorities closed Battle Creek Road during the clean up, which continued into Sunday night, Jones said.
