(The following report by P. Kim Bui appeared on the San Luis Obispo Tribune website on September 10.)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Amtrak train passengers in San Luis Obispo County had to be bussed between here and Santa Barbara Monday because of a train derailment in Guadalupe, according to an agency spokeswoman.

An 84-car Union Pacific freight train derailed about 10:45 p.m. Sunday in the northern Santa Barbara County city.

That disrupted train service to and from San Luis Obispo and Grover Beach, so passengers were transported by bus as efforts to clean up the derailment continued, Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell said.

The tracks were cleared by 6:18 p.m., Connell said.

It was the second disruption of rail service on the coastal line in two weeks. A fire along the Gaviota coast shut down the tracks for a time last week.
