HOUSTON, Tex. — The Gulf Coast Rail District is in its final stages of completing a yearlong two-part study to determine the future of a possible commuter rail reaching from Hempstead to Houston, along Hwy. 290.

The first part of the study was performed by Houston-based engineering firm Klotz Associates and was funded by $715,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or stimulus funds, according to Maureen Crocker, executive director for the rail district.
