NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson says a man who exchanged fire with a railroad police officer in New Albany died of a self-inflicted wound.

Henderson said an autopsy and investigation showed that 29-year-old DeWayne L. Baldon of Louisville, Ky., died of a single shot fired from his 9 mm handgun.

Henderson said the shooting began shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday in downtown New Albany. Baldon fired twice at a car he had been riding with his girlfriend and their 3-year-old daughter.

Baldon then exchanged gunfire with Norfolk Southern police officer John Hartman, before turning the gun on himself. No one else was injured.

Investigators don’t know what prompted the shooting.
