(Maine television station WLBZ posted the following story on its website on April 14.)
BANGOR, Maine — Visiting Maine Friday, the president of Amtrak said despite the rail carrier’s financial problems, it will honor its commitment to the Downeaster train service.
David Gunn rode into town on the Downeaster for a speech Friday night. Gunn says Amtrak’s strategy right now is to “regroup and rebuild.” Gunn believes that, in the future, the federal government is going to have to create a transportation system for rail similar to the one for highways and air travel. Gunn took over the Amtrak job about a year ago. He is credited with saving New York’s train system a decade ago.
