CLEVELAND, March 10 — The National Labor College has a full slate of hazardous materials training courses and radiological transportation training workshops coming up in the spring and summer of 2011. BLET members are encouraged to attend one or more of the classes to increase their knowledge regarding the transportation of hazardous and/or radioactive materials.
All workshops will take place on the campus of the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md.
Hazardous Materials Training
The training, eligible for 3 academic credits from the National Labor College, addresses OSHA and DOT required procedures and different levels of response and worker protection in a hazardous materials emergency or release, weapons of mass destruction awareness, the incident command system, as well as components required to complete OSHA 10-Hour Outreach certification. The training includes advanced classroom instruction, small group activities, intensive hands-on drills and a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear.

Radiological Transportation Training
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has shipped large amounts and a wide variety of radioactive material by rail for years. The number of rail shipments is expected to increase in coming years. With the increase in rail shipments comes the increased risk for rail incidents involving radioactive material.
Each of the three training courses will begin on Saturday morning, and end at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Funding for this course will cover travel costs, overnight room accommodations (Friday and Saturday) and three meals a day at NLC. The dates are as follows:

Hazardous Materials Instructors Training
The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program prides itself on delivering the most valuable worker safety training available. Peer Instructors are members of the railroad labor community and take pride in offering the latest and most up-to-date information, teaching techniques and peer support.

June 5-10, 2011
July 17-22, 2011
The goal of the Rail Program is to build a nationwide pool of skilled peer trainers to deliver awareness level hazardous material training. This DOT funded train the trainer course provides regional peer trainers with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver this training at their job-sites, union meetings and in their communities. The pre-requisites required are completion of the five-day Hazardous Material Awareness course offered by this program and a true desire to help protect your co-workers.
