NEWARK, N.J. — A day after social media exploded with horror stories from commuters who were delayed 90 minutes or more on their way home, we’re getting a clearer picture of exactly what went wrong — and why it could possibly happen again in the future. The crippling delays appeared to be the fault of Amtrak’s aging infrastructure, laying bare the problems of relying on two trouble-prone early 20th Century tunnels to move 21st Century passenger volumes. Amtrak owns Penn Station and the Northeast Corridor Line that NJ Transit trains run on.
