BRADENTON, Fla. — The high-speed rail system called for by Florida voters in a constitutional amendment received a cautious boost from a Senate committee in the State Legislature, the Bradenton Herald reports.

The Senate Commerce and Economic Opportunities Committee approved a bill (SB 1992) authorizing the Florida High Speed Rail Authority to seek competitive proposals for the design, construction, operations, maintenance and financing of the system.

But the bill specifies that the authority cannot enter into a contact without legislative approval.
