LONDON — Plans to celebrate one of the most important events not just in North East history but that of the world is working up a head of steam.

It was 200 years ago this year – probably – that Puffing Billy became the first commercial ‘adhesion’ steam locomotive when it was used to haul coal from Wylam Colliery to Lemington Staithes on the River Tyne at the then impressive speed of 5mph.
