NEWARK, N.J. — Fixing the 106-year old rail tunnels used by tens of thousands of commuters will take longer than originally estimated, Amtrak officials said Monday. A multi-faceted plan calls for new Hudson River rail tunnels to be constructed in the coming decade, which will then allow the existing tunnels to be taken out of service to be rehabilitated. The work was supposed to take one year for each one of the old tunnels, but now will take as long as 18 months.
