BILLINGS, Mont. — When you tally the millions of tons of Montana products that travel by train, coal unquestionably remains king. But few outside the energy industry realize that about half of the oil produced in the prolific Bakken oil play in North Dakota and Eastern Montana reaches its destination by rail.
