AUGUSTA, Ga. — An investigation into Sunday night’s train derailment in Jefferson County could take weeks to be completed. Norfolk Southern said the train was traveling from Macon to Augusta. Two of the 37 cars that derailed were breached, a news release from the company stated. Norfolk Southern confirmed that hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid was released, but there was no indication of a chlorine leak. According to the release, company personnel and environmental contractors worked through the night and recovery efforts continued Monday. Rail cars are being re-railed or moved to a nearby staging area in order to make track repairs. The train crew was taken to Jefferson Hospital for evaluation.
