SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Crews were working Monday to clear the wreckage after a Union Pacific train that derailed, forcing the temporary evacuation of about 100 people, a wire service reported.
Eighteen cars of the 80-car Union Pacific train derailed about 7 p.m. Sunday, said railroad spokesman Mark Davis. There were no injuries.
Davis said residents in the area about a mile from Aubrey were evacuated as a precaution because one of the derailed cars contained a form of ethylene compound, a potentially toxic material.
None of the chemical leaked, and residents were allowed back in their homes around midnight, said Denton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Kevin Patton.
Davis said the cause of the derailment was under investigation, and crews were transferring the ethylene to other vehicles.
A 1,200 foot section of track that was damaged was being replaced, and the rail line was expected to reopen by late Monday.
The train was traveling from Fort Worth to Kansas City when it derailed. Aubrey, which has about 1,300 residents, is 40 miles northwest of Dallas.
