EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A damage award of more than $1 million in a recent Vanderburgh County civil trial illustrates what some say is a significant industrywide safety issue for railroad employees. A Vanderburgh Circuit Court jury on Sept. 21 awarded former CSX railroad engineer Homer Lowrance $1.37 million in damages. Lowrance, who lives in Henderson County, Ky., had worked 27 years for CSX when he suffered career-ending injuries in 2005 at age 53.
