KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Southern has received the first two of 27 locomotives that will be converted to cleaner, more fuel-efficient engines.

The converted locomotives will produce a 25 percent fuel savings and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions 70 percent, the company said.

Once all the locomotives are equipped with the new engines, Kansas City Southern will use 11 in the United States and 16 in Mexico. The engines also are expected to make the locomotives more reliable with more predictable maintenance costs.
