CHICAGO — U.S. railroad Kansas City Southern on Wednesday posted a quarterly net profit compared with a loss a year earlier, citing higher margins and rising revenue.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based company reported second-quarter net income of $19.2 million or 24 cents a share, compared with a loss of $27.3 million or 33 cents a share a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected earnings per share for the quarter of 19 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.
