PITTSBURG, Kan. — Three railcars derailed at about 9:45 a.m. this morning, southeast of Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center and blocked the tracks on S. Rouse and as far north to the Quincy and Jefferson crossings.

The cars were a part of the Kansas City Southern railroad and may have been off the tracks as far back as the Empire power plant before screeching to a halt in Pittsburg. One boxcar’s axle blocked a portion of the railroad crossing on Centennial.

Train officials expect to have the area cleaned up sometime today. One rail worker said, “Things happen in cold weather.”
